Columbia March 30 Special Willie Bethune a colored man must hang in Clarendon after the supreme court affirmed his death sentence for the killing of G B Minis a white man. Minis killed by Bethune during an arrest after Minis found Bethune driving Minis horse and buggy with two negro girls.
The Georgetown community honors Reid Whitford former assistant U S Engineer in charge of the Georgetown office for decades of river and harbor work. His leadership improved tributary rivers and deepened the bar enabling today’s commerce. He is praised as a skilled civil engineer and devoted public servant with a spotless safety record.
News from Moody South Carolina dated March 29, 1910 notes the burning of Thomas Tankins store in Cedar Creek with about three hundred dollars in merchandise and twelve hundred dollars in cash. Tankins was away when the fire started. Two men charged with robbing Richmond Virginia post office between Saturday night and Monday morning were arrested at Grand Central station New York. $30,000 worth of stamps were recovered from three trunks traced from Richmond. Suspects Frank Chester and Frederick Cunningham denied, while a third man escaped. Police and postal inspectors followed trunks to identify the robbers and recover the loot.
A Newberry merchant argues for joining the chamber to support public works, fair pricing for farmers, better roads, post office improvements, and a stronger city. He claims nonmembers are drones and urges collective effort to push Newberry to the front.
