Georgetown Farm Land Plan Transforms 180000 Acres

A visitor reports rapid progress by the Georgetown Farm Land and Development Company on 180000 acres. A 60 foot main road with drainage and multiple 30 foot roads will span from Sampit to Black rivers, enabling farming tracts of 50 to 1000 acres. Several local buyers have cleared land and grown crops, notably corn, strawberries, watermelons, and cotton, as drainage works continue.

In Columbia on June 26 J W Messervey a white convict serving twenty years for manslaughter killed Van Clanton a negro serving ten years for manslaughter at the State Penitentiary. A shovel was the weapon and both men had long been incarcerated for manslaughter. Messervey says Clanton cut him first as they cleaned the barber shop under the hospital and Messervey struck with a shovel in self defense.
