Beginnings of Intensive Farming in Marlboro County
Columbia June 23. Nearly fifty five years ago intensive farming began in Marlboro County South Carolina. At Beaver Dam Academy near Bennettsville eight miles east a group formed the Beaver Dam Agricultural Club to study farm methods and award prizes for best crops. Capt. B L McLaurin won early prizes for corn and wheat with deep plowing, manures, and Peruvian guano. The practice spread statewide leading to larger yields, new fertilizer use, and many county clubs and prizes for high per acre outputs.

Emigration of American Farmers to Canada Noted
Immigration has been our spec tre, but the emigration of some of our best citizens has been going on right under our noses. In the past twelve months more than twelve thousand farmers, mainly from the middle West, have sold out and moved to Canada for government homesteads. Since 1897 over half a million Americans have crossed the border, with estimates averaging 1000 dollars per person, totaling about 520 million in gold over thirteen years. The shift continues, even as immigration keeps population high, but the focus is the loss of capable farmers to Canada.
