Prelate Denounces Race Gambling In Supreme Court Action

In Columbia on June 7 Bishop H P Northrop of Charleston figures in a Supreme Court argument over a check dispute between Southern Seating and Cabinet Company and Rigst National Bank. The case centers on a $500 check lost in the mail and a second, unpaid substitute. Also noted is an appeal in Louisiana to revive horse racing, met with Archbishop Blanck’s strong opposition, denouncing race track gambling as a moral and financial curse to New Orleans.

Death of Mrs Porter 72. funeral set for 10 tomorrow

Mrs M J Porter died last night at 72 and will be buried tomorrow morning at 10 from the home of Mrs J E Whilden on Church Street. She divided time between Georgetown and Sumter. Survived by two sisters M A Flowers and A G Warren of Sumter, and brother Robert M Mack of Florence. Children J H Porter and John Porter of Georgetown, William and Edward of Jacksonville, Frank Porter of Lockhart, and Mrs W V Whilden of Sumter. The Sumter News notes the obituary notice.

Dedication of Three Long Nails By Doctor Ding

A Burmese pedagogue named Dr Ding vowed in his youth to never cut three nails. He promised they would be dedicated to Heaven Earth and Confucius. The nails grew to three feet and curved like antelope horns. An American collector offered $1000 but was refused.

Court records from Recorder Shu ford session

In the Recorder's Court this morning Judge Shu ford presided. George Gibson pleaded guilty to petit larceny and was fined $2.50. Primus Judon was fined $5 for shooting a pistol within city limits. Abraham Joseph received a $5 fine for fighting along with Wm Judon also fined $5 for fighting.

Paroled: Boy in Reform School for Housebreaking

Harris a negro youth sentenced to three years for housebreaking and larceny at age 11 was paroled during good behavior. He served under a white caretaker, J W Elliott of Lancaster, with Gov Ansel citing Elliott’s care and the solicitor’s opinion as grounds for release. The petition was signed by the prosecutor and local citizens.

Seattle dispatches report ice breakup on Lake La Barge opens navigation along the Yukon river. First boat to leave White Horse today as crowds surge toward new gold fields in the lower Yukon region. congestion eases with passengers streaming from Skagway and White Horse over the next ten days.

Young Mrs Tillman May Sue Husband Over Estate Sums

Edgefield reports a possible civil action against B R Tillman by Lucy Dugas Tillman through Attorneys DePass and DePass of Columbia. They plan to sue for about fifteen thousand dollars alleging squandering borrowed sums and rents from her estate. Papers had not yet been filed and the amount remained undecided while they awaited court duties in Richland.

Naples reports a severe quake centered in Avellino province striking central Campania. Calitri worst hit with about twenty deaths. other towns including Valeta and Castri suffer damage. Tremor at 3:07 am caused collapsed houses and panic with troops deployed to assist.
