The father Douglas Huntington lay dying as Henry fired and was captured by a guard. Edith and Elizabeth were said to be in serious condition.
In Havana and Santiago province efforts to incite an uprising against American domination are reported. A clash occurred between Rurales and would be revolutionists while guards are concentrated at Guantanamo to prevent trouble amid official denials and citizen alarm.
A rich turpentine operator Joseph Givinng is shot dead by his wife Mrs. Givins after he assaulted her for styling hair in a pompadour. She says he drank, seized her by the hair, and she fired a gun in self defense. No arrest reported for Mrs. Givins.
In Boise on July 30 Charles H. Moyer president of the Western Federation of Miners awaited bail decisions at district Court. Officials said the delay came as authorities considered a straight cash bond rather than a personal bond guaranteed by cash. A request to admit George A Pettibone to bail was submitted and denied by Judge Wood.
McGregor Texas reports an extreme heat event with the sun reading 179 degrees and 117 in shade. The affected area stretches three miles by two, with a haze and many casualties seen among people and livestock, including about 35 head of stock.
A non commissioned officer saluted a colonel unexpectedly and was ordered to report. When asked why he returned the salute, he said he always returns everything he is not entitled to. The colonel laughed and dismissed him.
European tin prices rise due to speculators and chocolate makers urge collectors to save and sell used tinfoil. Report notes industry spends about four million dollars yearly on tin foil and claims agents will buy it at market value. A Hamburg socialist journal cites workers selling tinfoil sheets to fund a common library.
