The Gov. Safford, a side wheel steamer built in 1884 and owned by Atlantic Coast Lumber Corp, foundered near Bogue Inlet after rough seas. Capt. Dick Turpin and Capt. Fred Adair commanded the vessel crew, who scrambled to the Katahdin before the Safford sank in seven fathoms. The Katahdin, carrying the rescued crew to Baltimore, arrived in Georgetown after the rescue.
