Notable Visit and Tragic Rail Collision Reported

The narrative opens with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Neglay passing through the city en route to McClellanville to visit Dr. H M Hucks and family and tour Charleston and the Isle of Palms. It then recounts a deadly rail wreck near Johnson City on Southern Railway No 42 with six dead and about twenty injured, including a labor agent George Moore and several negro passengers. A tale about Stonewall Jackson and the bridge builder Miles is included, followed by a separate wreck near Whistler, Louisiana, on the Mobile and Ohio line where engineer Thomas Dease was killed and firemen Evans suffered injuries.
