T M Kearney, permanent chairman of the Democratic State Convention, called Col Roosevelt a man of ire and fire who speaks in the prize ring style. He accused Roosevelt of avoiding tariff issues and blinking at reform, as the convention opened at 8 pm with likely late sessions.
In Moundsville West Virginia on July 11 eight miners are believed killed by a gas explosion at the Panama mine of the Ben Franklin Coal Company. A rescue party with General Foreman McCabe reached two injured men but the gas was too strong to continue deep in the shaft.
In Anniston Alabama on July 11 members of Birmingham company B 2nd Alabama infantry were struck by lightning. Charles Kirby and H Rape died while seventeen others were seriously injured and hospitalized. One injured man was not expected to survive. The bolt melted metal at the mess hall and a flag pole, but the hall remained standing. The pay roll signing was interrupted as dead and injured were identified.
