Roosevelt's Youth Shifts Gavel at National Convention

Our New York Letter recalls a 1900s convention moment where Powell Clayton of Arkansas chaired briefly. The young Roosevelt, aged twenty four, objected to a national committee's influence, demanded Negro recognition, and supported Lynch as a delegate from Mississippi. It notes 1886 Cleveland administration weakness, a loose convention, absent patronage, and New York’s candidate with ninety nine votes. Harrison, Allison and Finlayson are mentioned in the chaotic prelude to the nomination.
