A sailor recounts how a single glass of rum derailed a voyage causing wreck and the loss of his wife and two children. He tells how intoxication led to a fatal night, leaving him adrift on the coast and forever haunted by the tragedy.
Francis Murphy, who died in Los Angeles, inspired ten million to sign the temperance pledge and spent thirty-six years rallying crowds without political or coercive methods. Once a drunk, he reformed and urged better natures, earning the title The Apostle of Temperance and a monument to his life. Also listed are guests staying at the Tourist Hotel, including W. L. Sheriff Kitchens and Marshal Smith traced Hargraves and Marc Ruff two weeks after they killed Richard Jones at a Sunday camp meeting in Gibson Georgia. As the posse surrounded a secluded cabin Hargraves resisted and was killed. Mare Ruff remained at large. All involved were described as desperadoes from the moonshine and blind tiger region of the state.
Joseph Boucher of Meriden arranged three years of peace by paying his wife 500 dollars to refrain from pursuing money or contact. The notarized agreement frees him from wifely persecution, with a possible return only if the wife chooses after three years.
A streetcar collision in Schenectady New York on July 7 killed Andrew Dulczewski and fatally injured another boy, with two more seriously hurt. The Amsterdam youths, members of a visiting baseball team, were riding on the running board when the car swung a curve and struck them. Charles Smith and William Dulczewski suffered serious injuries, while Edward T Fitzgerald sustained a broken left arm.
