Yesterday in Saluda county a farmer, Will Taylor, was killed by his son in what is described as a defense of his mother. Details are sparse but the motive is linked to the family dispute. In Utica July 4 a manhunt ended near Bloomingdale as George Delcour of Lake Placid was surrounded and taken into custody after a pursuit that began when Delcour fired on Policeman Frederick Cutler, fatally wounding him, and after Officer John Arnold was wounded in a gunfight.
In New London harbor the City of Lawrence struck Black Rock in dense fog at seven this morning. The midship hull was punctured but the vessel settled on the ledge, 150 excursionists boarded boats, baggage moved to Griswold, and transport arranged to Providence for Block Island connection. Superintendent J Howland Gardner organized the arrangements.
Authorities nabbed a caravan of gypsies on the outskirts of Springfield Illinois for theft. Investigators found canvas bags in the wagons containing thousands of dollars in gold coins, with one sack alone worth about ten thousand dollars.
A caller touts high profits from buying farmland timber houses and businesses at inflated prices North and South. The pitch promises big price gains, mortgage relief, and wealth, offering to provide manufacturer addresses and money-lenders, asking for a 2 cent reply stamp.
