McFarland Denies Guilt in Pittsburgh High Death Case

Greeneville Tenn Jan 18 Rev W D McFarland former head of the academic department of the Pittsburgh High School indicted this week in the death of his former secretary Elsie Dodd Coe says he has no statement now and will tell his story to the grand jury. He claims innocence and says Miss Coe was virtuous and like a daughter. He recalls visiting Pittsburg last fall addressing a youth society and avoids confirming January travel. He knows Rollis McConnell of Chicago but denies knowledge of any improper relations with Coe. His wife arrived last night and is staying at a hotel. McFarland did not know she had reached Greeneville.

Lascar Seamen Perish in Wreck

Aberdeen Scotland Jan 18 The British steamer Wislow Hall wrecked on rocks off Aberdeenshire. Fifty three crew drowned as only two reached shore. Life boat attempts failed amid gigantic seas. Lascar sailors predominated among the lost. captain survived with 55 crew saved. Vessel of 2189 tons built in 1890 in Greenock.

Avant Talks Of The Bigham Case

Walter Hazard of Georgetown reveals Avant’s account of the murder of Ruth Bigham at Dr. Bigham’s Murrel’s Inlet home. Avant says Bigham warned of an approaching threat and he mistook a figure in the dark for an attack, insisting he did not intend to shoot Mrs. Bigham. Hazard’s disclosure emphasizes Avant’s fear, escape attempt, and severe losses to family and bond obligations.

Butter Prices Rise to 42 Cents at Wholesale in 28 Years

Wholesalers fixed yesterday the butter price at 42 cents a pound the highest in twenty eight years. Retailers charged 51 to 52 cents for first quality butter and supply of this grade was restricted at the top price. The record figures were established.

Butter Shortage Drives Prices Up Across States

Quotation of the Mercantile notes causes for butter scarcity. Cold winter reduced output, last summer’s drought limited storage, cows died, and Brennan law caps holdings at one year preventing reserves.
