The Columbia State argues that lack of self-control and regard for life makes people barbaric, noting that without a pistol a man might refrain from assault, but with concealed weapons brutality rises and self defense claims can shield killers. It cites a case of Garer mistreating an African American messenger.
The Georgia Issue notes a German writer’s claim that chemists supplied 267 wine merchants to adulterate liquor. A wine merchant allegedly used 300 tons glycerine and other acids over seven years while another confessed to selling 55,000 gallons of wine without grape juice. The piece argues much liquor sold is chemically produced and harms society. It also recounts Bamberg county duel where W H Garner was killed and England wounded after a confrontation over a pig and insult, invoking cries to protect human life and punish manslaughter.
A satirical note lists how a corn distiller yields four gallons of whiskey sold at 16,80 with shares allocated to farmer, US Government, railroad, manufacturer, drayman, retailer, consumer, wife, children, and a licensing politician. It ends with a Bible verse condemning aiding drink.
