In the new year the piece urges unity to advance Georgetown with key goals. It highlights electric railway and a long distance telephone system as essential, profitable projects for 1909 requiring cooperation of property owners and the business community. The piece asks whether the city will act or remain stagnant.
The piece reflects on bidding farewell to the old year as a shifting figure of history. It contrasts joy and sorrow, likening time to a palsied man moving toward a graveyard of past dynasties. Time relentlessly marches, shaping continents, cities, and races as it passes through hours, days, months, and centuries.
