Alleged Argument for Prohibition Pardon Request

Petitioners seek clemency for Hamp James serving a life term in the Marion county penitentiary for the 1903 murder of Handy Bethea. They claim Dillon dispensary liquor corrupted James, rendering him “crazy drunk,” and that South Carolina’s liquor law contributed to the homicide. House approves joint resolution for federal income tax amendment

In Columbia on February 17 the House passed by 100 to 3 a joint resolution to amend the Constitution to permit a federal income tax. No discussion occurred and it is believed Senator Bailey of Texas influenced the vote. The measure moves to the Senate tomorrow.

Accident shoots hunter as dog triggers shotgun

Paul H. Jones was accidentally shot while riding to a hunting field when his dog pressed the shotgun trigger with its paw. The load struck his arm, risking loss of a hand and part of the arm. President Joseph S. Davis of the Albany Trust Company narrowly avoided death from the charge.
