Clemson College issues guidance on hog cholera prevention amid statewide spread. Advice covers disposal of carcasses, restricting visitors, avoiding sick premises, preventing disease spread via streams, sourcing healthy stock, cleaning and disinfecting pens, and using approved serum as a preventive measure.
Taft appeals for help to Chinese famine victims. A C Kaufman lists South Carolina Red Cross board members and urges statewide relief efforts with funds cabling to Washington. McFarland convicted of first degree murder in cyanide poisoning case based on circumstantial evidence and letters.
An 1842 New Orleans banquet paid Henry Clay one dollar per plate, described as costly for stomach trouble. The ad promotes Dr King's New Life Pills as a safe, easy remedy for digestion and other disorders, priced at 25 cents at druggists.

Washington dispatch reports Light Vessel No. 71 at Diamond Shoals was struck by the four masted schooner John Bossert of New York on January 9. Despite heavy damage the light vessel remained on station to aid Atlantic shipping until relieved by Light Vessel No. 69. The report details extensive damage to the light ship and its gear, plus battered wireless equipment, amid 12 mph winds and rough seas.
An advertisement by Geo H Watts promotes fire wood cut to any length and home delivery plus high grade shingles at reasonable prices. The copy notes the author’s gritty work ethic and warns of hazardous conditions in their labor.
A letter from Mr AM Therd of West Burlington Iowa describes long standing stomach catarrh misdiagnosed as cancer. After failing with doctors in Chicago he cites Peruna and Manalin as creating relief and a full recovery, claiming continual use of Peruna.
