A C Brice of the city says he was warned that the Maine would be blown up two nights before the explosion but withheld the warning at President McKinley’s request. He told how a former Spanish officer and Cuban sympathizer delivered the warning, which Havana officials did not credit, before the mine caused the ship’s magazine to explode.
