Fortuna Sails After Hurricane Rescue Off North Island

The tug Wm. P. Congdon under Capt Jas H. Porter rescued the three mast schooner Fortuna ten miles off the bar near North Island after a hurricane damaged her. Fortuna left Charleston August 26 bound for New York with lumber. two sailors died earlier from poisonous gases during fish scrap cargo unloading. Fortuna now anchors off North Island and may be towed to Charleston or brought in for repairs. Georgetown July 19, 1911.

Tragedy at Mt Pleasant Wharf Drowns E R Smith

The coast storm claims E R Smith of this city at Mt Pleasant wharf. Two Colombians with him escaped. The party sought refuge at Dr Kendall’s cottage after winds rose, and Smith disappeared while returning to the boat landing to recover a pocket book.

Salve Adverts and a Charleston Rescue Tale

An old notice describes Bell's Antiseptic Salve priced at 25c for skin diseases. A disaster narrative follows as wind and waves maroon a crew on a trestle, leading to a rescue near Charleston and the death of Mr. Smith aged about 52. A. L. George and Wm. L. Perry aided the recovery and body transport to Columbia.

Death Toll Rising After Charleston Hurricane

Early morning lists confirm at least fifteen dead from the sea storm that struck Charleston on Sunday surfacing from surrounding areas. Names include Alonzo J. Coburn Southern Railway engineer Ida Morgan Rosa Robinson E V Cutter Robert E Smith Mrs M Goodson and others with two unknown men and one unknown woman named from islands near Charleston as authorities anticipate more fatalities.
