Southern Union Urges Hold Back Cotton to Boost Prices
The Sumter County Farmers' Union calls farmers and merchants to halt selling for at least sixty days to defend cotton prices. They warn against a predicted drop to 10 to 15 cents and urge dry, stored bales, limited loans, and coordinated action by unions, bankers, and manufacturers to sustain a living price amid looming oversupply and drought risks. The letter, dated August 8, 1911, from Sumter, South Carolina, stresses joint effort across the cotton belt to boost prosperity.
