In Atlanta a man named Eugene H. Grace was shot during a room quarrel with his wife over selling her property. Attorney Branch claimed Grace was shot in the morning after a dispute and a scuffle, amid allegations of a planned frame and fear of disgrace.
Georgetown born Mr W. P. Smith, now a Sumter resident, announces his bid for the House of Representatives in the Sumter Daily Item columns.
A House bill by Rep. Paul of North Carolina proposes a Lincoln Grant and Lee memorial in Washington costing 1 250 000 with 250 000 for a Lee statue opposite Grant and 1 000 000 for an arch over Pennsylvania avenue linking to the Grant statue. States would furnish material with inscriptions chosen by a commission including the Secretary of War and Gen Bennett H Young. The Grant statue stands west of the Capitol in the botanical garden.
Washington on August 1 Your Uncle Sam is broke again as several large appropriation bills await passage in Congress. For the past month government funds have run under an emergency resolution extending last year s appropriations through July. No money is available for the army navy post office or other principal establishments. Congress is expected to pass another emergency resolution for one more month.
An advertisement claims deafness stems from an inflamed Eustachian tube and must be treated constitutionally. It offers $1000 for any catarrh deafness not cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure and promotes Hall's Family Pills for constipation, with Toledo company details and druggist pricing.
Regular drill reveals completion of preparations for mounting a three inch rifle owned by the Naval Reserves on the Bluff. Denver August 1 A cloudburst swept across Colorado last night causing flooding washing out railroad tracks and destroying crops. Cattle were killed and several towns were flooded as tourists were marooned in Colorado Springs. Monument dam was weakening under flood strain and alarm spread among farmers. Reverend Henry Stokes returned from Greenwood where he visited family.
