In Columbia April 23 citizens condemn the field for the new government as weak and corrupt. Twenty candidates for council and mayor show three experienced business figures and many linked to the old system. Campaigns focus on personal accusations while Y M C A funding faces internal dispute and broad skepticism.
Columbia hosts a discussion led by C. Middleton and Ira Williams on expanding beef cattle fattening in South Carolina. They cite ideal climate and railroad access, call for tick eradication, and note growing markets in Baltimore and eastern states with plans for loading pens at railroad stations.
On April 22 the Atlantic Transport Liner Minnehaha ran ashore off Hugh Town Scilly Islands and dumped part of its 17 000 tons of cargo into the tidal waves. Locals rushed to salvage automobiles furniture and sewing machines while farming and fishing halted. Salvage plans include lightening the ship by cutting her to save the wreck with tugs on standby.
Mr. B F Taylor of the Taylor plantation and diary farm near Columbia spoke to the correspondent, detailing observations from the estate and plans for the harvest season.

The Seaboard and C C O roads will run an all Pullman excursion from Columbia to Elkhorn City via Charlotte and Bostic. The northern terminus is Clinchfield with a daylight run north through scenic mountains. Departure is at night with arrival in Charlotte by morning and return trips planned with Dante for daylight on the return. Meals and sleeping cars included for about $20.
Springfield Massachusetts April 22 three thousand spectators watched the balloon Springfield lift from Court Square extension with A Holland Forbes John Parker and William Hull of New York City on board. The craft caught in tree branches swung toward an apartment building narrowly missing a collision before Forbes cut ballast and the balloon rose clear. Weather forced the landing in Hadley about twenty five miles from Springfield instead of Brattleboro Vermont or Keene New Hampshire.
Engineer William C. Moore of an extra freight from Jersey City ignored danger signals near Edgemoor yards on the Pennsylvania line. His locomotive struck a Philadelphia freight, wrecking and burning cars but injuring none. Moore was captured, restrained, and placed in a strait jacket at the Delaware Hospital after a frenzy.
Mrs. Etta A. Smith of Goldsboro, N C describes relief from neuralgia and assorted pains after taking Cardui the woman’s tonic. The letter urges others to use Cardui for illness or prevention and notes a free 64 page booklet from the manufacturer.
