Miss Clara Barton founder of the American Red Cross died at 9 a m in Glen Echo Maryland after a yearlong illness of chronic pneumonia She celebrated her 90th birthday on December 23 and earned fame for Civil War relief work and international Red Cross leadership through Geneva Rome Vienna and St Petersburg commitments She led the organization from 1881 to 1904 and aided disasters from the Johnston flood to the Galveston flood and Cuba yellow fever efforts.

Columbus Ga April 12 James Jefferson who was to have been hanged today committed death by own action in his cell early this morning He took poison soon after midnight and died at 3 30 o clock in spite of the efforts of several doctors Where he got the drug isn t known He killed Policeman Marion Marshant several months ago After several appeals to Gov Brown to save him the death watch was set over the condemned man last night There was still a bare possibility that the Governor would take some action at the Lith hour although the executives had repeatedly refused to interere with the mandate of the courts Jefferson e e thought all hope was Pindon after midnight he remarked that he wanted a drink of water He went to a cooler got what he wanted and then said he would sleep Unusual breathing and pallor were noticed by the watchers and they summoned physicians The drug had done its work however and the law was cheater Avlanta April 12 E By Alford was saved from the gallows today by a respite from Gov Brown until May 10 He was to have been hanged in Macon at noon Alford is suffering from the last stages of consumption and it is expected that he will die before the time set for execution He was convicted of killing his wife and mother in law in Bibb county The Governor considered his case with that of James Jefferson who cheated the gallows the morn ing by committing death by own action in Co lumbus This was his third respite
