A fragmentary verse noting prayers and fellowship themed around auld lang syne. References to Christian praise, mercy seat, Jésus feet, and mutual blessing, dated October 1839 from Columbia, South Carolina.
A weary traveler seeks shelter at a crowded tavern in the upper state. Ghost stories unfold as a supposedly haunted room provokes fear and a prankster ghost shaves gamblers, while the visitor unknowingly pockets their money. A humorous moral closes the tale with quips from the crowd.
Isaac Lovejoy of Troy reports a bot remedy from the January Cultivator showing vinegar soap gin and molasses given to a horse. He claims the horse relieved from pain within five minutes and recovered to ride the next day, and says he has since used it in fifty cases with success.
The entry discusses beef by animal type with descriptions of grain, fat color, and tenderness, noting ox beef as richest and largest and heifer and bull beef with different traits.
