The late arrival news from New York and Boston shows a continued rise in Cotton prices and confirms the settlement of the Eastern Question. European leaders clash in a frayed dialogue as Thiers regains popularity and the Beach Ministry clings to power as England pursues imperial expansion.
The Montezuma arrived in Philadelphia from Manila via Macao with August mid reports. Chinese seized an English missionary at Canton, English demanded release. attack on a Chinese fort near Macao killed sixty to seventy, British forces deemed unable to press trade or force major action in China.
Negotiations underway among the Banks of Maryland and Virginia to resume specie payments soon with expectation that North Carolina banks will also resume. The Baltimore Patriot notes a resolution to resume February 1, with Richmond and other banks likely to follow.
As required by state law, Philadelphia banks resumed specie payments on Friday the 15th inst. There was no bank run, but a notable demand for specie for small bills at the Bank of the United States counter.
The Governor appoints F. A. Tallmadge to replace Morris as Recorder of New York. Morris was removed for his unwarrantable conduct in the Glentworth business last fall.
Ransom Clark of Maj. Dade’s command, the only survivor, died at his father’s home in York Livingston County New York. The report notes his recent death after a long, bloody account of his escape. A secondary item mentions resumed specie payments with banks experiencing low demand for specie and patrons accepting paper.
Investigating the Maine Legislature uncovered that no election by the people occurred. Votes counted show Kent 45,575, Fairfield 45,207, Hamilton 28, Smith 15, and Scattering 55, totaling 91,180 with 45,291 needed for a majority, leading to Edward Kent being chosen by the Legislature.
Gov. Buchanan begins sugar cane culture on his Liberia farm. The current crop is expected to yield ten hogsheads of sugar.
A man named Joseph Warren from Randolph or Chatham was arrested Monday on a theft charge for stealing 150 dollars from a gentleman in an Auction Room. This is the first known case of its kind here. The Fayetteville Observer notes another item about General Nathaniel Green’s burial site, stating his remains’ exact vault location near Savannah cannot now be ascertained.
A boiler explosion at Leander M. Ware India Rubber works on Fountain Street Providence collapses the building. Twelve workers, mostly women, are hurt. a thirteen year old girl dies after being trapped. One other young woman badly burned. Engineer unharmed. Water shortage blamed as cause. city vows investigation.
Paris correspondent reports two plainclothes men aboard the Dorade during the Courbevoie convoy night. One adult requested access to the imperial remains. a whisper prompted swift entrance. A kneeling man, tearful and prayerful, stayed for twenty five minutes before collapsing and needing seamen’s help. he was Marshal Soult in disguise.
A letter from London reported by the New York Express says the U S Bank loan discussed for its benefit is completed in full. The negotiated amount is one million ten thousand pounds sterling.
The National Intelligencer reports the Senate has been summoned by the Executive to meet in Washington on March 4 for executive business tied to the start of a new Administration and cabinet formations.
In the Pacific, whaling ships number 460 and carry crews of about 12,000 seamen. The fleet is estimated at nearly 200000 tons and investments exceed twelve million nine hundred thousand dollars.
A Northern post master in Maine near the Aroostook line writes Colonel Barry praising reform yet pleading to keep his job. He notes eleven children nine girls and a yearly income of three dollars and thirty seven cents to buy sugar plums and a Thanksgiving goose, asking clemency.
The city inspector reported 8474 interments for the year in New York City and county. Of these 4357 were white males, 3617 white females, 60s sill born infants, and 500 were negroes. Interments rose by 251 versus last year, attributed to smallpox and scarlet fever, with 3976 infants among the deaths.
