A Kentucky settler Pope and his wife are detailed with a slave Isaac who attacks the matron after she yields control of the estate. The wife defends herself by killing Isaac, saving her life and earning praise from Kentucky ladies for courage and chastity.
A humorous anecdote explains the expression gone coon by recounting Captain Martin Scott of Vermont who supposedly scared off a raccoon by frightening its fear with a rifle. The tale ends with the raccoon noting the captain is indeed Martin Scott, implying distress or ruin.
