Ship John Rutledge wreck tale reaches New York harbor
A fragmentary 1856 report from Sew York details the ship John Rutledge sailing from Liverpool Jan 10 with 140 passengers. A lifeboat was lost, and survivors from a stricken vessel near the Gulf Stream faced starvation and freezing conditions. Rescue attempts by a German barque yielded few salvations, with the Rutledge crew of 26, minus one saved, and the ship insured for 70000 dollars amid a cargo of merchandize.
