Major Marshall's October report to the chief of engineers details federal river and harbor work in Illinois. It states $2,000,468 spent on the eastern Hennepin canal segment, from Dunals river to the feeder junction, with the first 24 miles condemned and paid. Western section shows nearly four miles of main canal finished and right of way cleared from the feeder junction to Rocker.
A despatch from Camp Tanner Springfield Illinois dated November 20 1898 describes the Sixth Illinois Volunteer Infantry in a harsh blizzard. Soldiers endure cold cramped quarters and improvised heating while routines and guard mounts continue amid discomfort.
