Prophetstown fire damages Wempeter hardware store
A 50 000 dollar blaze at Prophetstown Whiteside county ruined the Perry W Wempeter hardware and implement store from a faulty furnace. Exploding gunpowder and shattered windows followed as County Attorney H H Waites office records were destroyed. Insurance covers losses and the fire prompts a reorganization of local fire defense.
