Smugglers Clash With King's Men at Dundrennan Abbey
In a night battle near Dundrennan Abbey, about 70 smugglers clashed with excise officers. Four officers wounded, two very ill but stable later. The smugglers, armed with dry goods chiefly tea, escaped. a large smuggling vessel pursued earlier by cutters Cook and Pigmy. The chase ended with no losses among smugglers. two casks of spirits seized. Harvest near end, oatmeal sold at gad per stone.
