Press liberty praised and Carmarthenshire butter rules

In Carmarthenshire a January 1774 meeting of the Association reports new regulations to curb butter frauds in export trade. Rules require ash firkins of 56 pounds, standardized cask patterns, strict salt limits, and rapid packing. Merchants sign to enforce these terms, with penalties and possible tenant removal for violators. Publication also notes a third edition of William Buchan’s Domestic Medicine.

Liberty of the Press as a Shield for Public Duty

The essay extols the Liberty of the Press as the greatest security for individuals and a check on those in authority. It notes that public scrutiny forces officials to act with integrity, and that open discussion prevents unchecked malignity. Drawing from M. de Lolme, it urges defending press freedoms to avoid becoming slaves of tyranny.
