A Portuguese warship from Rio Janeiro arrives with details of a clash in which about 20 000 rebels faced 450 European deaths and 270 wounded. The battle ended without prisoners as rebels lacked arms after a fierce defense and the Europeans withdrew despite heavy cannon fire.
