A Gatesville fire siren sounded at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday causing alarms before crews in Hamilton were notified. Operator issues hindered reporting as volunteers, unable to reach the operator, watched responders manage the location and dialed calls. Local phone manager notes the unusual sequence.
Regina Balch, Miss Gatesville, is highlighted as the town’s leading ambassador candidate for the 1968 Miss Texas pageant circuit. She is set for multiple TV appearances, a Safari tap dance routine, and a busy schedule in Brownwood, Abilene, and Dallas events, while pursuing Kilgore Rangerettes duties and college studies.
The Coryell County League of Vocational Nurses and the Tri-County League sent representatives to Fort Worth for the 17th annual state convention of nurses held last Thursday through Saturday. From Gatesville came Mrs. Marie Chambers and Mrs. Inez Lee, with attendants Mrs. Nancy Chaney, Mrs. Etta Lou Rahl, Mrs. Dorothy Walsleben, and Mrs. Willie Lee Pruitt. Ora Gilmore of Turnersville, with the Waco VA Hospital, also attended. Marie Chambers was elected and installed as a trustee.
Pam Curry of Gatesville, daughter of Mr and Mrs Bentley Curry, earned a spring semester dean's list honor at Temple Junior College with a 2.6 GPA of 3.0 possible.
Bates Cross thanks Ophelia Mayberry Hall for a June Nineteenth barbecue on her lawn celebrating Emancipation Day with both Black and white friends. L. C. Kelly cooked barbecue while neighbors served cakes pies and cobblers, praising lasting white colored friendship in Gatesville.
Mrs Walter C Addie Tharp 85 a former Turnersville resident died Saturday in San Angelo She lived near Turnersville before moving about 30 years ago She married Walter C Tharp in 1901 and was a longtime Methodist member Graveside services were held Monday at Turnersville Cemetery Survivors include three sons a daughter a brother six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren
Flat gains supplemental loan as county officials await final approval on a state finance grant to buy and improve Evant’s water system and install a new sewer line. Evant Water Supply Corp plans to serve 101 sewered families and 230 them water, with Marion Glover leading the purchase option for 65 000 from Spencer Passmore. FHA loan aids Flat Water to extend lines to 17 more families. Evant would become the tenth Cory County community to receive such funds.
Escapees from a school fled Tuesday night taking clothes and a small amount of money before being nabbed and returned to the school. The stolen bike was recovered. Other runaway suspects remained at large as police tracked a car found abandoned Wednesday morning.
Construction advances to ninety percent on the Oglesby water and sewer system. A 26500 dollar community water system is underway at Le Vita. The Grove has approved a 140000 dollar FHA loan for a water system.
The Conall Co annual meeting in Gatesville elected fifteen new directors for the chapter board, joining eight holdovers from Gatesville and Copperas Cove. Rolland McLean, retiring chairman, presented plaques to several people as officers, committee chairs, and plans for next year were outlined.
A ten day gospel meeting opens at 8 15 tonight at the Turnersville Church of Christ with minister J L Prichard of Carlsbad New Mexico as evangelist. Weekday services are 8 15 p m and Sunday services at 10 30 a m. The meetings run through Sunday July 7 with an invitation to all to attend.
At the membership meeting awards were given to J. D. McCaul ey and Jerry Corby for campaign work, nursing home volunteers led by Phyla Belt and Nan Franks received recognition, and special honors went to McLean. Rev. Walter M. Alle McCauley presented the prizes as Antoinette Rogers outlined 1967 68 chapter activities. Guest speaker Sam Gardner discussed Red Cross McLennan County chapter efforts.
Floyd II McKenzie of Copperas Cove sues for 20000 dollars in 52nd District Court for burns from a Feb 4 mishap at Hinton's Enco Station in Copperas Cove. He alleges the explosion occurred while draining gasoline from a leaking tank and blames station employee negligence.
Over the weekend Mrs Chambers and Mrs Merle attended a musical with the C W Pitts family in Arlington. They visited and attended a Desert performance at a theatre on the State Fair grounds in Dallas.
