Robbers hit See Teaming Supply Co in Hammond last night, taking about $2,000 in bonds for city improvements and $500 in checks plus some cash. The lighter safe was cracked with a ten pound sledge, and the thieves left the tool behind. Police have limited leads as to the culprits.
Mrs. Ethel Schmidt of 805 Maryland street Gary wife of Hugo Schmidt owner of Gary Tile and Marble Works died at Mercy hospital last night after an overdose of Vernol. She had a history of Vernol use and threats of self harm dating back years. Police noted she had hidden Vernol and ingested it while her husband was away.
Franklin Ind April 2 The charter of Indiana Bell Telephone Co remained intact after a jury verdict reached in about 20 minutes. The state sought to forfeit the charter and appoint a receiver claiming the contracts restrained trade and created a monopoly. The court instructed the jury over two hours that evidence did not justify dissolving the corporation. The jury ruled against enjoining the 4 percent contract or prohibiting executive committees and director choices linked to options with American Telegraph and Telephone Co. of New York.
East Chicago readers learn Briggs and Turvias will take over the Republic Iron and Steel works in four weeks. Geo M. Davis notes orders remain to be fulfilled, while workers hope for continued employment and future improvements under the new management.
Nearly a thousand Jewish citizens from the Calumet region gathered at the Hammond synagogue to honor the dedication of a Hebrew university on Mount Scopus near Palestine. Col. Edward T. Miller of the United Typothetae of America spoke to printers from Gary East Chicago Hammond Whiting and others at Levent's fish house. He shared cost sheets and production figures drawn from Typothetae data to illustrate shop costs and efficiency.
Vice Admiral Sir Michael Culme Seymour died in London. He served as second Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Personnel since last year, rose from captain to rear admiral in 1916 and to vice admiral in 1920, and fought at Jutland in 1916. He later commanded the Black Sea squadron and served as second in command in the Mediterranean in 1920. He was Commander-in-Chief of the North American and West Indies station before becoming chief of naval personnel.
Mayor William J. Fulton, sworn in last Monday, ordered a city-wide clean-up of vice and directed police to stay out of politics. He blamed Gary J. P. courts and other law enforcement outside the police department for the city’s black eye. He vowed a “spring house cleaning” of vice and warned officers not to politicize while he remains mayor.
Gary constable Mike Boill, already jailed on shooting charges related to Mrs. Walter Sawicki, was re arrested on bribe charges and held on a $1000 bond. He allegedly took bribes from Mrs Sawicki while her husband faces shooting charges.
International News Service reports Wilson and Company preferred stock fell seven points after a reorgan ization plan announced. Common stock slid two points to 74 4, with preferred at 241/2 and earlier-year highs noted. The plan preserves most debt and offers stockholders 11/2 shares of common per preferred and 4 tenths of a share per existing common share.
Hammond police have detained several black men over the last day as they seek the assailant who attacked and robbed Mrs. Onufry Popyk near Cline avenue between Fifteenth and Summer streets. The description was given with an interpreter and shared with police and sheriff’s forces in a wide radius. One man matches many particulars but has not yet been presented to Mrs. Popyk for identification.
Dr J B Kelly a 40 year old dentist was found dead in a hotel bathroom with a chloroform saturated towel over his face. Coroner says circumstances suggest death may not be self inflicted. Wife and friends dispute suicide. He used the alias Pat Henderson and a hotel clerk recalls a woman seeking him last night claiming to be his wife.
Ben Benson a well known soft drink parlor operator and owner of a fish and chicken dinner resort at Robey died early today after a period of illness. He enlisted in the army from Alaska at the start of the war and later returned to the United States before settling in Whiting. Funeral plans are not set but the American Legion is expected to handle arrangements.
Chicago April 2 Northwestern university co ed Caroline Smith is offered a cast place in the musical revue opening April 12 replacing Evelyn Gardner after a photo in an abbreviated costume circulated. Campus friends urge her acceptance as James Montague, the show's representative here, makes the offer.
Three elderly inmates at the German Evangelical home for the aged in Brooklyn were killed by illuminating gas after room windows were closed. The deceased were Adam Meuser 76 Michael Heinrich 74 and Julius Hengstler 77 all widowers. A score of other old men survived because transoms to the hall were shut or room windows were open.
Chicago April 2 retail pork prices for chops and roasts eased 10 to 25 percent over the past ten days. The Institute of American Meat Packors survey notes a March peak in hog prices with a $2 record rise per hundredweight. Current prices remain about 80 percent above a year ago as exports decline.
Police investigate a street shooting in the residence district. Alvin Marr, 25, was wounded in the leg after claiming a hold up by a young man who followed him and his wife Mary 24. Mary Marr, hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, could not identify a suspect or witness.

Rev. Father James William Martin, 2 years old last Saturday, collapsed with pneumonia upon entering St. Elizabeth's hospital in Danville Illinois and died today. Lincoln Illinois April 2 authorities investigated intimidation in the death by self inflicted gunshot of Ralph J Danner 15 who took a gun to bed after worry over a subpoena to testify against Henry Menzel charged with shooting at a dog in city limits Menzel had broken a window pane and Danner felt dishonored by the subpoena.

Chicago April 2 coroner's chemist Dr William McNally reports post mortem evidence in an imported Scotch case. He states the amber tint comes from analine dye used with 38 percent alcohol. He notes the dye colors neckties and golf socks and cites a quip about drinking water.
A gun battle occurred on State Road 6 three miles west of Lafayette early Tuesday. A man was injured and a Ford touring with blood stained interiors was found by deputies, possibly tied to booze runners. The car title lists Thomas Smith of Indianapolis as owner. Indianapolis police are investigating.
Hobart patrons at the Gen theater faced a scare when a film caught fire during a Tuesday showing. Smoke filled the auditorium but flames were put out quickly and no one was injured.

Mike Bok a 53 year old Hammond street department laborer was seriously hurt yesterday while at work on Summer street near Tore Lyth avenue. A tow car driven by Lytle Whittaker hauled a disabled machine for Mr and Mrs Schechtel who faced trouble with their vehicle. The Schechtels sat in the front seat steering backward as the wrecking car with an improvised hitch operated nearby.
