A Baltimore clipping notes Ralph Smetkinson who ran a long established food store in Washington DC. After a weekend riot the shop was gutted and a bystander offered aid, while a relative asked about insurance for the injured rioters. The item blends local memory with a Parisian style aside.
The Mail Users Council will be organized under Garland Post Office with Postmaster Glen Pool as adviser. The council will include large volume mailers to improve service and reduce costs, share regulatory changes by newsletter, and lend government equipment to assist efficiency. About 20 firms have been contacted. membership is open to interested patrons. DR. HELLER addressed the American Savings Symposium opening a new Dallas office, praising the tax bill and discussing inflation, Viet Nam peace prospects, and economic outlook for housing and autos as servicemen return.
Neal Clinton Vervalin of Caddo Mills sustained the loss of the end of his left index finger when his hand was caught between two steel beams while guiding them during hoisting at Intercontinental Mfg. Co. He was hospitalized at Garland Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Commissioners Court approved stricter rules for construction contracts with the county after sub contractors threatened litigation. Electrical firms unpaid for remodeling at the Old Courthouse and Records Building totaling $20 000 vow to sue. A one year performance bond is required on contracts over $5 000 and payments are to be withheld until sub contractor payments are settled. County Architect Clarence Overbeck notes courthouse work will not be reimbursed until the subcontractors are paid.
Mrs. Eddie Landrum reported an illuminated aquarium when a lamp fell into the fish bowl and began shooting electrical sparks. Garland firefighters retrieved the lamp and handled the mishap unfolding at her home on West Ridgewood.
Partly cloudy conditions for the Garland Dallas area with a warmer night. Overnight low in the mid 70s and Saturday daytime high in the upper 90s.
In Austin Texas the long running liquor by the drink fight moves to the Senate after passing the House and surviving multiple crises in committee. The showdown ends a 50 year dispute over whether to permit liquor sales by the drink in the state.
More than 500 bankers enroll in the 1968 Southwestern Graduate School of Banking to study management credit and trusts. Three Garland officials join local attendees. sessions start July 14 on the SMU campus with a two week course and year long extension work.
Mrs Effie Mae Young 82 of Nevada Texas died Thursday in a Dallas hospital. Born August 4 1885 she was a Hardin County native and lifelong Baptist. Services Saturday 10 am at Spurlock Funeral Chapel with Rev M L Young officiating. Burial Restland Memorial Park. Survivors include husband John M Young five daughters five sons two sisters two brothers and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grandsons will be pallbearers.
Three Garland Kiwanians will attend the 53rd Kiwanis International convention in Toronto June 30 to July 3. Don A Buchholz his wife and son Robert Howard Williams J P Barber and their spouses join a roster of about 20 000 attendees from the U S Canada Mexico the Caribbean Western Europe the Far East Central and South America. Sessions take place at Maple Leaf Gardens with a pageant flag ceremony president s ball and entertainment. Noted speakers include U S Senator Robert Byrd Saskatchewan Premier W Ross Thatcher Paul Harvey and Kiwanis leaders James M Moler Michael A Waters and David A Keyko.
