In Jackson Mississippi UPI reports the state will seek the death penalty for Byron De La Beckwith, charged with the sniper killing of civil rights leader Medgar Evers. Beckwith was to appear for a preliminary hearing before City Judge James Spencer at 4 p.m. EDT. Dist Attorney William Waller said he would ask the Hinds County grand jury to indict Beckwith for murder when it convenes next Monday.
A Galveston hearing before the Interstate Commerce Commission considered Santa Fe Rail road plans to move or eliminate its Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe subsidiary office from Galveston to Dallas and Topeka. The move would cost about 390 local jobs and $2 million in annual payroll, while Dallas supports the merger with the parent company. ICC ruling was not expected for weeks.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev will travel to East Berlin on Sunday to counter Western momentum sparked by President Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin. Tass announced the trip to observe Ulbricht’s 70th birthday and to bolster East German aims for a treaty with the Soviet bloc. Observers say Khrushchev’s remarks may hinge on Kennedy’s moves in West Berlin.
The IRS eased some expense account rules allowing deductions for country clubs lodges and yachts but business leaders say the system remains too complex. National Restaurant Association counsel Thomas W. Power urged Congress to simplify. Rules apply to the current tax year but enforcement starts after July 31 to allow taxpayer familiarization.

Two armed men in an old black and red car robbed a service station attendant at Belt Line Road and U S Highway 67. LeRoy Haabart 42 of Dallas was alone when the men demanded oil then a dollar, produced a .38 pistol, forced him to lie down, and took cash from the register before fleeing. The incident was reported by Garland Police Lt. Bob Presley, Patrolman Harold Baty, and Dallas County Deputy Cecil Ray.

The Space Committee also opens study of 5.7 billion Space Budget cuts for 1964, with subcommittees proposing a 492 million reduction, under Chairman Miller. Bipartisan Senate leaders craft a resolution on trade ahead of further action.
New York officials seek questioning of 10 individuals including former Interior Secretary Oscar Chapman and ex-Massachusetts congressman Joseph Casey over a $3 million worthless oil lease scheme.
