Governor John Connally said in Dallas at the State Democratic convention that the 1960 Legislature will face the largest tax bill in history and that the state may need as much as 400 million dollars in new taxes to support operations.
Delegates from Democrats and Republicans meet in Dallas and Corpus Christi to choose national convention delegates. Protests target Gov Connally's favorite son status and the unit rule, while Texas GOP hearings address Harris County delegations and Tower endorsement plans. Connally previews budget, taxes, and liquor bills amid somber Kennedy memorial mood.
The Richardson district is installing air conditioning in 13 schools this summer under a Dallas firm The McCally Co financed by a 3.2 million bond voters approved last year One new Forrestridge Elementary will open fall with no bond funds The district plans duct ready designs for future cooling at newer campuses and uses steam absorption units in large buildings and rooftop units at several schools, with centrifugal compressors for newer sites Installations target spring semester 1999.
Police report a 1965 Pontiac sedan stolen from Piggly Wiggly Food Store 1300 Kingsley Rd Saturday night. The car owned by Tony D Long of Dallas was found damaged with broken frame, damaged power steering, broken front-end suspension and cut front tires after being returned near midnight Sunday.
The Garland Daily News Classified Advertising Department announces new deadlines to take effect Friday June 14. Ads submitted by phone or at the front counter close at 5 p.m. for all daily editions except the Sunday edition which closes at 5 p.m. Friday and the Monday edition which closes at noon Saturday.
James Earl Ray, accused King assassin, is held without bail in London on gun and passport charges. U.S. extradition efforts proceed, with Missouri and Tennessee papers in progress. Ray awaits a second hearing June 18 at Brixton Prison under heavy guard.
Sunday dawn disturbance in Central Park alarmed residents until the Garland 221st Mobile Communications Squadron Contingency unit of the Texas Air National Guard revealed a weekend alert and survival training. Lt Col Louis Howard supervised a dual federal state mission with Tinker AFB observers noting professional performance. The drill featured simulated POW interro gation and a test of the TRC-97 device, with 50 guardsmen deployed over a 12 mile radius and guard units reinforcing local police and fire needs if called to a real emergency.

In the June 18 Place 5 special election to fill the vacancy after Joe Lockridge, 29 absentee ballots have been cast as of Friday. Ten days in, voters have shown little rush, 26 personal and 3 mailed ballots. Assistant Chief Deputy John Rowland says turnout is unpredictable.
The Supreme Court voted 8 to 1 allowing taxpayers to sue over federal aid to parochial schools. Chief Justice Warren wrote the opinion with Justice Harlan dissenting. The New York City residents can now bring their challenge, arguing the 1965 Education Act funds church-related schooling.
