Phone Booth Rampage Hits Four Garland Booths
Thieves attacked four telephone booths owned by General Telephone Company Thursday and Friday. At Cabell's Grocery 1309 South Forest Crest the coin box and receiver were taken. A Texaco Service Station at 2301 Walnut reported damage to the receiver and theft of change. Handy Dandy Grocery at 1420 Amundsen Road suffered the most damage with an estimated 300 dollars in losses plus coin box removal.

Man Dies In Street Race Riot In Lexington North Carolina
A white man was shot to death and a news photographer wounded during a racial riot at a Lexington intersection. About 2,000 whites clashed with roughly 400 Negroes as rocks and bottles flew and three shots were fired. One victim died en route to hospital. a photographer was struck but not seriously hurt. William Tate, with two shotguns and a rifle, was held for questioning. State troopers aided local police amid the unrest.
