A Friday afternoon blaze at the Garland Plastics plant caused extensive damage to the facility and adjacent structures. Firefighters battled a highheat fire with water streams, evacuating areas including a service station and cafeteria while police controlled traffic on nearby roads. No injuries reported. investigators to determine exact cause.
The Garland PTA Decent Literature Committee reports more than 550 signatures on a petition seeking a city ordinance to prohibit displaying or selling obscene publications within Garland. Chairwoman Mrs. George Bateman predicts the total may reach 690 before presentation to the City Council. The petition, supported by United Services Committee and local groups, will be presented at the City Hall meeting at 7 30 p m Tuesday with Mrs. Bateman and Mrs. Jake Mosser on hand.
Garland Chapter of DeMolays to install officers at 2 oclock at Garland Masonic Hall with Mike Harris as installing officer. Harry Hopper will be master councilor, joined by Royce Paul Jones senior councilor Bob Craft junior councilor and Bob Smith scribe. chapter totals 37 members.
The regular city council meeting at 7 30 p m will consider enforcing a two hour parking limit in downtown Gatland. Mayor Ernest R Wright Jr said action may be taken on whether to enforce the ordinance. A petition by 80 business owners and managers urged enforcement. Also on agenda is action on issuing a special permit to Jesco Development Company for a shopping center on Shiloh Road between Miller Head and Forest Lane.
A Texas welcome greeted Rotary delegates aboard a special Dallas train when a staged mock holdup on Jupiter Road near Garland unfolded at White Rock Station. Arizona actors and local organizers, led by Hugo Boenk, captured the scene as Texas Rangers distributed the raiders and escorted President Charles G. Tennant from the train amid staged drama. The convention drew thousands from 168 countries to Dallas.
Atlantis Engineers, a new firm in electronics consulting and design, opens in the Lander Building at 708 W. Garland Ave. President Richard Bickel leads with vice presidents Frank Kissinger and Wendell Brooke, all former Texas Instruments staff. The Oklahoma natives bring semiconductor research and computer techniques to projects in automatic testing, controls, and data handling. The firm holds a Texas charter.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Lewis, Chief Engineman L. W. Holloway, one of 2 crewmen aboard the submarine Stickelhack, narrowly escaped death after the destroyer escort Silverstein rammed the vessel 19 miles off Oahu. The torpedo room nearly flooded but the crew surfaced and were taken to the rescue ship Greenlet before the submarine sank five hours later. Holloway reported by phone he was soaked but unharmed.
J. R. Johns, chairman of the 1958 Dallas County Community Chest campaign, will address the Garland Kiwanis Club at its dinner meeting Tuesday at 6 30 p m. The event will be held at Harris Restaurant.
F B Whitson of 304 W Ave F announced that residents along Avenue F between First and Fifth Streets will hold a sewer and gutter program meeting Tuesday at 8 o'clock in the TP&1 Building. A city engineer’s representative will attend to answer questions.
The 1958-59 Garland High School Junior Class will hold a paper collection next Sunday. Residents should place old newspapers and magazines on the curb for pickup by students with Junior Parents Club help. Call Hamilston, Burleson, Kunkler, or Leonard with large collections or if missed.
Six Garlandites will perform in the Rotary Chorus at the international convention in Dallas this week. Charlies Newman J 0 Rovissen Gordon Thompson Randall Cooper Hugo T Beeck and Roy Wright represent the Garland club under chorus director Dr Travis Shelton professor of miele at Southern Methodist University. The chorus will appear at the District Eight dinner in the Adolphus Grand Ballroom and at the State Dinner in the Statler Hilton. On Wednesday and Thursday morning the chorus will be on programs for general sessions at the Dallas Memorial Auditorium.
The June meeting of the North Texas Municipal Water Districts board of directors has been postponed to June 9. Regular board meetings are held on the Tuesday night monthly at the district headquarters near Lake Leaton.
Trustees may name a new tax officer Monday at a school board meeting. Several applicants have been screened with names such as Walter W. White and others under consideration while the committee reviews the proposed calendar for the next school year. The seating will be held at the School Administration Building.
Forty Hockwall High School seniors received diplomas during Friday exercises. Valedictorian Mary Margaret Mille led with a 96.10 grade average and 95.94 overall. Patey Kossoe White and Kenneth Renfro earned near top honors. Diplomaes were presented by O. W. White, president of the board.
