Garden Grove approves police contract amid budget strain
City officials and the police association negotiated terms from April to August and unanimously approved the new labor contract last week. The salary range for officers is 68 376 to 91 620 annually not including overtime or benefits, with the top earner at 149 977 in 2011. The deal comes after a 95.7 million budget with a 5.9 million deficit and actions like selling surplus property, taps into reserves, furloughs, and a hiring freeze. The department fell to 159 sworn officers from 172 in 2009 as staffing shrank. The pact adds modest raises, increases sick leave buyouts to 75 cents per dollar above 240 hours and allows 100 percent sick leave cash-out at retirement. The city projects about 1.08 million in compensation increases.
