Rain slows harvest across 12 counties with limited corn yields
Rainfall ranges from 1.61 to 3.72 inches across 12 counties affecting harvest. Jim Fox of Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Dighton notes no corn yet while Garden City and Lakin elevators report low incoming grain. Much wet grain heads to cattle feeding as managers warn late moisture hurts some crops but corn appears less vulnerable. Merle Koehn of Dodge City Co-op in Montezuma says it may be too late for some crops and conditions deteriorate.

Hurricanes Jeanne Hammer Florida and Southeast
Jeanne caused at least six deaths in Florida and two in South Carolina as it raked the region with 120 mph winds. Insured damage nears 22 billion dollars, with total losses typically double that amount. FEMA has launched the largest relief effort, and President Bush sought over 7.1 billion in new aid, bringing total potential funds to at least 12.2 billion. Volunteers from Salvation Army and Red Cross distributed ice and water at staging areas along the central Atlantic coast amid high 80s temperatures and widespread outages.
