Denver defense takes blame for slow start
Broncos players reject blame on a new scheme and accept responsibility for early season struggles after a 23-14 defeat to Jacksonville. Champ Bailey says players must execute despite coaching calls, noting the defense failed to get off the field while Jacksonville consumed 11 minutes 44 seconds on an opening 18-play drive.

Trio played day of incident at Garden City game
Brodrick Smith, Brad Hoggatt, and Jace Banner, Garden City High School football stars, received in school suspension for possessing an Airsoft BB gun on September 7 less than two hours before a home game versus Ulysses. All three played that night in a 26-7 win, with Smith gaining 152 yards and three touchdowns and Banner adding 29 yards. School athletic director Bill Weatherly defended equal treatment and stated no one was held out of the game. The weapon was confirmed as an Airsoft model and was discovered after a classmate reported the trio. USD 457 said the gun was found at 6 p.m. September 7 a short time before kickoff. The district indicated the toy gun “did” not constitute a suspension or removal from the game.
