Islamic center near Ground Zero opens in New York
The Islamic cultural center near the World Trade Center site held its first exhibit as a small orchestra played traditional Middle Eastern music. Sharif El-Gamal, the developer, said the project erred by not involving 9/11 victim families from the start, while noting the building at 51 Park Place includes a prayer space and was modeled after the Upper West Side Jewish Community Center.
