Knife attack in Garden City teen faces off with man
Finney County Sheriff says a 17 year old Garden City girl Sabrina Quinonez was cut on the hand and above the eye early Sunday when a man she knew pulled a knife during an argument at 4170 E US 50. The assailant, 20 to 21, possibly from Dodge City and linked to a gang, fled before deputies arrived. Call Finney County Sheriff at 272-3700 or Crime Stoppers at 275-7807 with tips.

GCCC phone-a-thon aims to raise funds for students
Garden City Community College Endowment Association launches the 24th annual Scholarship Phone-a-thon from Sept 29 to Oct 9 to support GCCC students. A direct-mail drive attracted nearly 6,000 alumni and supporters, with about $12,000 received so far. Volunteers will call 6 to 9 p.m. each evening, from the Endowment Room in the Student Center, under the theme Changing Lives and Changing Communities with a $72,000 goal.

Unemployment steady in Southwest Kansas counties in August
Southwest Kansas sees stable unemployment from July to August with Garden City and Finney County rates dipping to 3.0 and 2.7 percent. A joyful four hour tribute concert at Garden City Community College celebrated the late Pastor Robert Allen of Second Baptist Church. Speakers included Mayor Reynaldo Mesa and Commissioner Tommy Austin. The event featured the Second Missionary Baptist Choir, local churches, and performances in multiple languages.
