Seven period day at GCHS reshapes time use and learning

GCHS shifted from an eight period block schedule to seven 50 minute periods with 25 minute mentoring and five minute passing periods. Principal Steve Nordby says the new plan quickens the day, boosts daily student and teacher contact, and demands immediate homework completion. Teachers note seniors initially worried but students adjust, with benefits in core subjects and lab planning, though some say labs and activities feel tighter. Overall, Nordby reports positive feedback after a month as staff and students adapt to closer daily interaction.

A projected $200 to $300 million budget shortfall looms this year, demanding cuts, while new legislators with local government backgrounds are seen as more sympathetic to cities and schools and Medicaid expansion.
