Soldier sues over religious freedom at Fort Riley
AP reports Spec. Jeremy Hall, based at Fort Riley with the 97th Military Police Battalion, sues Defense Secretary Gates and Maj. Welborne in federal court in Kansas City over alleged discrimination against atheists and non Christians. The filing alleges threats to charge Hall and block reenlistment for attempting to hold an atheist meeting. Mikey Weinstein of MRFF spearheads the suit asserting constitutional violations and seeks to bar Welborne from imposing compulsory religious practices and to protect Hall's free speech. Lt. Col. Jonathan Withington says DoD supports religious practice rights and that accommodations should not harm readiness. Hall claims he faced a religious test for his posting. The suit follows the 220th anniversary of the Constitution.

Kansas juvenile sex law appeal dismissed moot
The 10th Circuit in Denver ruled the appeal moot after Kansas enacted a new sexual abuse reporting law effective January 1. The case, begun by former Attorney General Phill Kline, challenged his reading that mandatory reporting applied to underage consensual sex. The Center for Reproductive Rights and Attorney General Morrison welcomed the ruling.
