Alvin Latham 48 was acquitted of second degree murder in the 2000 sinking off Louisiana where Captain Raymond Leiker 35 died after a storm. Autopsy cited stabbing and propeller impact. Leiker died on the Diamond II during a July 2000 voyage.
Alameda California police say Mayor Ralph Appezzato was found dead at his home from a likely self inflected wound. Police Lt Jim Brock declined to specify the injury but stated the death appears to be suicide. Appezzato's wife discovered the body after returning from a dog walk. No foul play is suspected.
The United States faced skepticism as Iraq agreed to admit United Nations weapons inspectors with no conditions.
