Geraldine M. Gerry Cowan 85 of Lakin died September 15 2008 at Western Plains Medical Complex Dodge City. Born September 26 1922 in Arkansas City she lived in Wichita Minneapolis Lebanon Lakin Hugoton Greeley Coffeyville Salina before returning to Lakin in 1986. A homemaker she served 11 years on the Lakin City Council and belonged to United Methodist Church PEO Eastern Star and Kearny County groups. Survivors include daughters and grandchildren with memorials to the Methodist Church Scholarship Fund and Kearny County Senior Center. Funeral 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lakin United Methodist Church. Burial Lakin Cemetery. Visitation today 3–8 p.m. and 9 a.m.–2 30 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home. Condolences at garnandshsb global.net.
Sergio Loera, 31, formerly of Garden City, received a 38 month prison term in Finney County Court for a 1995 shooting outside the Monfort plant near Mansfield and Farmland roads. He pleaded to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, with 36 months extra post release supervision and a 10 year Kansas offender registry requirement. He sought to serve near Dallas but was told to remain in Kansas.
