State Board delays AYP changes under No Child Left Behind

The State Board of Education chose to keep proficiency targets unchanged for reading and math through 2014, delaying increases that would push districts toward higher benchmarks. Kansas standards for grades K-8 remain 63.4 percent reading and 60.1 percent math, high school targets are 58 percent reading and 46.8 percent math, while sanctions list for underperforming schools was postponed.

80th Community Mexican Fiesta celebrates independence

The Community Mexican Fiesta marks its 80th year with a Friday through Sunday event featuring parades, music, and food to honor Mexico's independence from Spain. Organizers say the milestone highlights years of cultural presence and shared tradition. On Friday a pageant will crown five young women ages 17 to 20, chosen by application and restricted to residents of Kansas. Contestants include Carmen Baeza, Andrea Lira, Rita Perez, Elizabeth Trevino, and Blanca Vasquez. The pageant takes place at 7 p.m. Friday in Clifford Hope Auditorium at Garden City High School. 80th Annual Community Mexican Fiesta in Garden City

Garden City hosts the 80th Community Mexican Fiesta this weekend with events at Stevens Park and Finney County Fairgrounds. Highlights include queen scholarship pageant at Clif ford Hope Auditorium, a downtown parade, Mariachi Estrella performances, folk dances, a karate demonstration, games, raffles, and a jalapeno eating contest.
