GCCC trustees eye future needs and LPN program
Garden City Community College trustees discussed a potential licensed practical nurse program to start January 2004 pending state approvals. The plan would use one full-time and one part-time instructor with an estimated startup of $81,500, offset by potential enrollment revenues. Space issues at the Penka Building and other overcrowding concerns spurred proposals for campus expansion, including a Front Door Project to centralize admissions and services, and plans for a new football stadium and soccer facilities with scholarships efforts led by LULAC.

Judge rules Mayans can use leftover funds for Wichita race
Sedgwick County district judge Paul Buchanan ruled that State Rep. Carlos Mayans may use about 72 000 in remaining campaign funds in his bid to be Wichita mayor. Ousted challenger Joan Cole had filed suit alleging campaign money could not be used in city races. Cole called the decision a breach of Wichita campaign reform. Mayans welcomed the ruling as a vindication of his decade in the Statehouse.
