The Buffs and Panthers opened with mixed results as Great Bend's 5A power rose to No. 4 after a 35-6 win over Pratt while GCHS slid to 2-7 last season. Coach Bo Black praised Great Bend's program and eyed a tough test against Garden City as Caleb Smith led a 28-21 loss with a 67-yard TD to Mark Doering.
